Physical Literacy

Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. It’s an essential ingredient for an active life!

ParticipACTION and Physical Literacy

Physical literacy is the gateway to physical activity and provides so many amazing benefits, like improved physical and emotional wellbeing, cognitive ability, and overall good health. It provides the building blocks required to participate in physical activity and sport. And, like any life skill, you need to continuously develop physical literacy from the early years to the senior years – and everything in between.

Resources to help you take action

We all play a role in advancing physical literacy – and tools and resources are available for physical literacy and physical activity champions to help increase awareness and understanding of physical literacy among Canadians.

The development of these tools was made possible, in part, with support from the RBC Learn to Play Project, an initiative funded by RBC and the Public Health Agency of Canada. We also acknowledge the input and support from the following organizations: Active for Life, Sport for Life, Coaches Association of Canada, and ViaSport.
